Marketing for Hair Salons

Marketing for Hair Salons
By Selena Schaefer

Are you using Facebook to market your salon services and products?

According to, facebook Marketing expert Martin Smith says you should be.

In 2007, Martin says ” Social networking sites, especially Facebook, have significant implications for business owners, marketers, and entrepreneurs around the world. To keep your business current, you should at least be familiar with the latest social media marketing techniques and viral technologies, including Facebook and its array of powerful features.
Facebook recently crossed the 100 MILLION member mark. That’s no small number for sure. Yet, millions more will join this incredible platform in the coming months and years. And the vast majority will be seeking to use Facebook primarily for business purposes.” In 2011 facebook has exceeded 500 million users.

Also the Top 10 reasons to use Facebook in your salon are as follows:
1.Meet your peers
2.Find business contacts
3.Instant gate opener
4.Build relationships
5.Raise visibility
6.Develop your personal brand
7.Target your niche
8.Get rapid top Google placement
9.Place targeted ads
10.No cost marketing

Below is one of the video’s in Martin’s Beauty Salon Marketing Series.

Not Marketing your salon can also hurt your business. to Martin some of the things that salons can do to help their business are, instead of working “in” your business, you should work “on” your business. Failing to create and use a Marketing plan is a very common mistake. Salons that use a Marketing plan can experience 30% higher sales.Being consistant with your plan and very important, having a system in place will make your life so much less stressful. Remember to Market to your current customers as well, these customers are the ones that bring you in new ones. Please don’t forget to track your Marketing efforts to see what is working and what is not. Find out your target market and market to all the people in that market. Offer add on’s to your services when you have the client in your chair and have their full attention. And finally ask yourself, how does your salon stand out from all the others? Differentiate your business.
Here is an example of a salon/spa’s Marketing video. This video may give you idea’s on how you may want to enhance your current website or if you don’t currently have a website you may want one after watching this video.

Martin Smith has a wonderful website that I found all this information on. Please take some time to visit his website as well as his facebook page. As a previous salon owner, I wish I would have done alot of the things Martin suggests. Running a business is very stressful and with the points that Martin has, I think I would have enjoyed the experiecne alot more.

The buzz on Sulfates

Both Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its close relative Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are commonly used in many soaps, shampoos, detergents, toothpastes and other products that we expect to “foam up”. Both chemicals are very effective foaming agents, chemically known as surfactants.

So why is a dangerous chemical like sodium lauryl sulfate used in our soaps and shampoos? The answer is simple – it is cheap. The sodium lauryl sulfate found in our soaps is exactly the same as you would find in a car wash or even a garage, where it is used to degrease car engines.

In the same way as it dissolves the grease on car engines, sodium lauryl sulfate also dissolves the oils on your skin, which can cause a drying effect. It is also well documented that it denatures skin proteins, which causes not only irritation, but also allows environmental contaminants easier access to the lower, sensitive layers of the skin.

Perhaps most worryingly, SLS is also absorbed into the body from skin application. Once it has been absorbed, one of the main effects of sodium lauryl sulfate is to mimic the activity of the hormone Oestrogen. This has many health implications and may be responsible for a variety of health problems from PMS and Menopausal symptoms to dropping male fertility and increasing female cancers such as breast cancer, where oestrogen levels are known to be involved.

Not sure if you have looked at Kenra’s website lately, if not it has some amazing Social Media upgrades. In the past Kenra’s website was very simple and basic. There wasn’t any interaction with the user and it just was not very exciting. That plain Jane website is no longer!

Once you go to the Kenra website, you will first notice that Kenra once again won for BEST hairspray for the 7th year in a row at the Stylist Choice awards. You can’t miss the large hairspray can sweeping across the screen. On the right hand side of the website you will notice the two new products, the Recovery Polish and the Straightening Gelee. Once you click in that box, it will bring up a page that goes over all the current promotions. Right below that box is What’s new and that is where you can watch a video on both of the new products. This video shows you how to use the products, from start to finish. What a great tool to loop on a laptop in the reception area for waiting customers to watch. Another great tool that has been added is on the top of the website, there are categories that you can click on. Example: Styling, once you click on it you can then pick which styling aid you would like to learn about. Once you do that, you will notice on the right what is right for my hair? Find out. This will bring you to the most amazing feature of this website in my option. It will ask you, what would you like Kenra products to do for your hair? and what level of hold would you like to finish your style?Once you give the site this information it will bring up the recommended shampoo, conditioner, styling aid and finishing product that would be best for your hair.

Kenra’s new upgraded website is amazing. What a great tool for a salon that has just recently brought in the line, to a customer that has never tried Kenra or maybe wants to try something new from Kenra. Please take some time and play around with the new features and you just might learn something new.

I wanted to share with you some of the ways the industry is doing their part. Thank you to all of the small and large businesses have stepped forward.

L’Oreal is one of the largest beauty giants in the industry and they are donating $1.3 million dollars to the Japanese Red Cross and are encouraging their employees to donate as well. They are offering an automatic payroll deduction to make it easy for the employees to donate.

Japanese owned hair salon, Ozuki Salon, is joining the relief effort by donating 100% of a special Sunday’s proceeds to support the people of Japan affected by the overwhelming, powerful earthquake/tsunami. Sunday, March 27, 1011 Days Proceeds to Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Relief.

For the month of April, Taka Hair Salon in LA will donate 10% of all retail sales to those who have lost everything in Japan.

The organizers of Japan’s Fashion Week have decide to cancel the event due to the earthquake. The fashion industry has contributed to the relief efforts, with Uniqlo donating over $17 million to the cause and Lady Gaga’s “We Pray for Japan” bracelets have raised $250,000 thus far.

Also in Boston the theatre production of HAIR is hosting a Japan fundrasier and will take place on Monday, April 4th at the Boston’s Improv Asylum on 216 Hanover Street. Tickets for the Boston HAIR Red Cross fundraiser are $20 and all proceeds will be donated to Japan.

What great ways to help out those in need. Maybe this article will encourage you to think up fun ways to help out as well!
